Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) July 20, 2007 -- Universal Music Group has become the latest company to be sued for allegedly failing to pay proper overtime to its computer and network support employees. In a class action complaint filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court, employees allege that the company improperly classified its Information Technology (IT) employees as exempt and thus did not pay proper overtime or provide proper meal breaks.
Both California and Federal law require that many types of IT workers be paid overtime, even if the employees are paid on a salary basis. This latest lawsuit against Universal Music Group follows a long string of lawsuits against such companies as Electronic Arts and Sun Microsystems, which were also accused of not paying overtime to their high-tech employees.
In addition to seeking unpaid overtime, the lawsuit is also suing for hundreds of thousands of dollars in civil penalties under California's recently enacted Private Attorney General Act. The complaint alleges that 75% of any such penalties recovered will be paid to the Labor and Workforce Development Agency -- the California agency charged with enforcing California's labor laws.
The Law Offices of Michael Tracy is representing the plaintiffs in this lawsuit. The case number is BC374253 in Los Angeles County Superior Court. Information about the case can be found at: http://www.gotovertime.com/cases/universal-music-group-class-action.html
